The minimum setup

A microphoneUSB mics plug straight into a computer. XLR mics need an interface but are easier to upgrade later.
Closed-back headphonesSo you can hear yourself and your guest without the mic picking up the sound.
A quiet, soft roomRugs, curtains and a closet full of clothes do more than expensive foam panels.
Recording softwareFree tools are enough to start. Record each person on a separate track if you can.

What can wait

  • A mixer or production console, until you have several hosts in one room.
  • Acoustic panels, until you have tried soft furnishings first.
  • A camera, unless you plan to publish video from day one.
